This painting is a tribute to Brazil (where I have lived for 10 years) which is undergoing major political and social changes. I was thinking that a superhero could come and lend a hand and save Brazil. John Wayne, therefore, appears in black and white as in my childhood dreams.
The Louis Xiv style armchair represents the colonial heritage that has hurt so many minorities in this country. I painted it in bright and cheerful colors to mark the modern, creative and multi-ethnic reconstruction of Brazil. The monkey eating its banana shows us the generosity and abundance of this land. The soccer ball represents people who are spent and have no financial resources to survive.
Sandals, one of which faces upwards, mean in popular culture that the mother will die (perhaps the end of the motherland). The butterfly represents the resurrection is the hope that Brazilians have of their nation to become a country of world reference. Finally, all the colorful elements: yellow, green and blue are the colors of the national flag.
